Activism is Elementary
Eight-year-old Cassadie Burge fell in love with polar bears when she first saw them at the Omaha Zoo four years ago. Since then, she’s been filling her bedroom with polar bear memorabilia and pictures — plus lots of stuffed polar bears, which live in a special igloo tent on her floor. More importantly, she’s also been filling her brain with polar bear facts.
This came in handy when Cassadie’s second-grade teacher assigned her class a special Earth Day project, in which students were to research an endangered animal, write about it, model it out of recycled materials, and make a display of its habitat.
Though Cassadie knew polar bears hadn’t yet been declared “endangered,” she begged for permission to do her project on the species — and of course her teacher couldn’t say no. Cassadie’s report ended up being six pages (instead of the required two), and her habitat display would put any shoebox diorama to shame.
Cassadie, you have polar bear knowledge far beyond your years, and a passion to match. Here’s to hoping your future — and the world’s — is filled with polar bears.

A sea change can begin with second graders — or maybe, it can begin with you. If you or someone you know has found a creative way to turn concern for the planet — and for endangered plants and animals — into change for the better, we'd like to share your story with the world. Send us your spotlight idea here.
