Center for Biological Diversity Presentation:
The Catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico and Ensuring This Never Happens Again

What: A talk by Center for Biological Diversity attorneys and scientists, entitled "The Catastrophe in the Gulf of Mexico and How We Can Make Sure This Never Happens Again.”

When: Thursday, June 3, 2010, at 6:00 p.m.

Where: Center for Biological Diversity San Francisco office, 351 California St., Suite 600, San Francisco (three short blocks from the Montgomery Street BART Station; cross street is Sansome).

Background: The Center for Biological Diversity has played a key role in uncovering the fact that dozens of Gulf of Mexico drilling projects were exempted from all environmental review on the grounds that there was essentially no chance of a large oil spill, and if a spill were to occur, it would be quickly cleaned up with no lasting damage.  Moreover, 19 of these projects were exempted from environmental review after BP's Deepwater Horizon exploded on April 20.

Join us for a public talk by Center staff outlining the current status of this disaster, how and why it occurred, the short- and long-term impacts on wildlife and the Gulf's fragile ecosystems, the administration’s decision last week to stop Shell's plan to drill in the Arctic this summer, and our work to make President Barack Obama's moratorium on offshore drilling real and permanent.

Last month, the Center filed suit against Interior Secretary Ken Salazar over his continued approval of offshore drilling plans in the Gulf without environmental review.
