Alaskans, Frostpaw the Polar Bear, to Rally in Anchorage Against Massive Arctic Oil, Gas Lease Sale

Final Auction of Obama Presidency Met With Call to ‘Keep It in the Ground’

ANCHORAGE— Alaskan activists and Frostpaw the polar bear will rally Wednesday in Anchorage against a fossil fuel auction on 1.4 million acres of northern Alaska lands. The activists are urging President Obama and the Bureau of Land Management to cancel this lease sale, the final federal auction before President-elect Trump takes office with the promise to accelerate the extraction and burning of fossil fuels and abandon the country’s commitments to address climate change.

What: Rally opposing federal fossil fuel auction of 1.4 million acres of public land in northern Alaska.

When: Wednesday, Dec. 14 at noon.

Where: Anchorage Federal Building, 222 W. 7th Avenue, Anchorage, Alaska. Rally in front of the building precedes 1 p.m. BLM bid announcements in Denali Room on the fourth floor.

Who: The rally is sponsored by the Center for Biological Diversity, Greenpeace and indigenous and community-based groups from Alaska.

“As one of his last acts in office, President Obama can make a serious stand for our climate by canceling this lease sale that will last for decades — consider it a step toward resisting Trump’s dangerous designs on wild Alaska,” said Dune Lankard, a Native Alaskan and the Center for Biological Diversity’s senior Alaska representative. “Alaskans are on the front lines of climate change. Our people are being displaced and our wildlife threatened with extinction. But we’re fighting back.”

The Center for Biological Diversity is a national, nonprofit conservation organization with more than 1.1 million members and online activists dedicated to the protection of endangered species and wild places.
