Action timeline

September 28, 2010 – The Center for Biological Diversity and the Environmental Protection Information Center (EPIC) filed a scientific petition to protect the Humboldt marten as a threatened or endangered species under the Endangered Species Act.

January 11, 2012 – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced that the Humboldt marten would be reviewed for protection under the Endangered Species Act. 

April 25, 2012 –  After the Service missed its deadline to make its next listing determination, the Center filed a formal notice of intent to sue.

June 1, 2015 – The Center and EPIC petitioned the California Fish and Game Commission to protect the Humboldt marten under the California Endangered Species Act. 

December 12, 2015 – In response to our June petition, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife recommended protection for the Humboldt marten under the California Endangered Species Act.

March 28, 2017 – In response to a lawsuit brought by the Center and EPIC, represented by Earthjustice, a federal judge overturned an April 2014 decision by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service denying endangered species protection to this marten. 

January 31, 2019 – The Center and local allies sued the California Department of Fish and Wildlife to challenge its “Safe Harbor Agreement” that would allow a timber company, Green Diamond Resource Co., to harm state-endangered Humboldt martens by clearcutting their habitat.
